Bio
John Vu is the Director of the Master of Science in Biotechnology, Innovation and Computing program, and is a Distinguished Career Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. John is a retired Technical Fellow and Chief Engineer at The Boeing Company where he led several successful aerospace programs, including software improvement for the 777 aircraft. John has over 35 years of experience in software and systems development and has managed several large-scale integration programs in which the final products required the integration of in-house components with commercial off-the shelf products and outsourced suppliers.
Prior to joining Boeing, John held several key technical positions at Teradyne, Litton Industries, HP, Motorola and GE. He served as a Visiting Scientist at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) where he participated in the development of several Capability Models (CMMIs). John is a SEI Authorized Lead Appraiser for CMMI, and P-CMM. As a Senior Scientist at Institute for Software Research (ISR) John conducted several studies on global trends of software and systems engineering and IT outsourcing in several countries.
John was a member of the IEEE Software Industry Advisory Board. He also is the founder of the Seattle SPIN, managing the organization from 1996 to 2003. John has written several books and articles on software project and program management. John received master's degrees from the University of Nevada and Carnegie Mellon University and undergraduate degrees from Ohio University. He is also a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley, Seattle University, and Tsinghua University.
